The municipal theater group presents this weekend at the Cultural Centre in Serra the play Los árboles mueren de pie (Trees die standyng tall), by Alejandro Casona. The theatrical performance will be done in two sessions, Saturday and Sunday, at 19.30. Admission is free for the entire public.

Los árboles mueren de pie is a drama in three acts that has as its central theme the farce to make people happy. Although, in the end, the lie is discovered. The play is the great theatrical stakes of the group for this year 2018 and has the support of the Department of Culture of the City of Serra.

The work was published in 1949 and premiered for the first time in Spain on December 18, 1963 at the Teatro Bellas Artes in Madrid. The piece is considered one of the most notable successes of Alejandro Casona after La sirena encallada.

The story tell us how a married old couple spend their days regretting that their beloved grandson left. Mr. Balboa, in order to help with his wife’s sadness, fakes letters and pretends they are written by their grandson. One day, a real letter saying he is coming back arrives. The grandson decides to come back home to get some money, but the boat sinks. Balboa hires an imitator, together with a very nice girl, who pretends to be the lost grandson in front of the grandmother. But the evil and real grandson arrives by surprise: he is not dead as they thought.
