Esparto grass (Macrochloa tenacissima) is a Mediterranean plant that has been an integral part of the landscape, economy, and culture of the Sierra Calderona. For generations, it has been a natural resource used by local communities to make everyday objects such as wicker baskets, ropes, espadrilles, and tools. The cultural heritage associated with esparto is invaluable, and it helps us understand that conserving a natural space also means preserving the traditional knowledge that connects us to the land around us.
In this workshop, we’ll explore the culture and craftsmanship of esparto. First, we’ll discuss its history, ecology, and uses, particularly in the Sierra Calderona. Afterward, participants will have the chance to work directly with esparto and make a small decorative broom with their own hands.
The activity is suitable for all ages, but requires some manual dexterity. Children may create a simpler item instead.
